Adult Orthodontics: Something To Smile About
Orthodontics offer a good choice for improving your smile and oral health. Some adults have problem teeth because their parents could not afford getting braces when they were young. Or perhaps the problem with their teeth is more recent. Now, options are available for correcting them and adult braces provide many advantages.
Crooked teeth or teeth that overlap are harder to clean around. As a result, this serves as hiding places for bacteria that cause bad breath, gum disease and tooth decay. Protruding teeth or gaps between teeth interfere with your smile and create an uneven bite, but getting braces can straighten crooked teeth and move teeth into proper position.
Adults now enjoy the results of adult orthodontics, which so beautifully provide a healthier looking smile. Invisalign is a much less noticeable and less painful method of repositioning the teeth. Taking care of your teeth sends the message that you are taking care of yourself, reflecting self-respect and confidence.
Traditional Wire and Bracket Braces
Metal brackets are very strong and can withstand most types of treatment. At first they may irritate your gums, but after a few weeks, when your cheeks get “toughened up” they are not a problem anymore. Most traditional metal braces require an elastic o-shaped rubber band, called a ligature to hold the arch wire onto the bracket. Sometimes orthodontists use metal tie wires (little wires which are twisted around the bracket) in place of elastic ligatures.
Ceramic brackets are made of composite materials. They are very strong and generally do not stain. Three popular brands are Clarity and Transcend, made by 3M Unitek; and Mystique, made by GAC. Adults like to choose ceramic because they “blend in” with the teeth and are less noticeable than metal.
Most of the time either type of brackets will work in your mouth, but only the Orthodontist can tell you for sure. Call to Schedule a Consult.
